Assisting Minister
A complete discussion of the role of the assisting minister can be found in The Manual on the Liturgy, Augsburg Publishing House, © 1979 (selected pages).
The role of Assisting Minister in worship has six parts:
- Praising God – Kyrie and/or Hymn of Praise
- Proclaiming the witness of the community – Lessons
- Interceding for one another and the world – The prayers
- Serving as stewards – Offertory Prayer
- Feeding the Hungry – Distribution of Bread and Wine
- Sending forth the people – Post Communion Prayer and Dismissal
All these duties may be performed by the Assisting Minister at the liturgy, however some other lay ministers may also participate in some duties (i.e. reading the lessons).
Check with the Minister of Music whether the Kyrie and/or the Hymn of Praise (depends on the season) will be sung by a cantor. The tone is sounded after the Greeting.
The Prayers may be composed by the Assisting Minister or taken from Sundays and Seasons (ask the Pastor or the Minister of Music). Check with the Pastor regarding other petitions, names and pronunciation of those who desire public prayer.
Wash hands and assist in setting the Table for communion during the offering. After the presentation of the gifts lead the Offertory Prayer. Assist with distribution of Bread and Wine.
