Readers, also called lectors
1. Obtain the Lessons from the coordinator who asked you to read, or from the Presiding Minister.
2. Practice the readings checking out difficult pronunciations with a Pronunciation Guide or the Presiding Minister.
3. Introduce the lesson as indicated in the Lectionary.
Example:
"A Reading from Isaiah" or "A Reading from Second Corinthians"
There is no need to indicate chapters and verses since these are noted in the bulletin.
4. You may choose to simply approach the lectern, pause, and proceed immediately to the lesson. This is especially effective for some readings, e.g.
"Comfort, comfort.." and "Arise, shine, for your light has come."
5. After the lesson say, "Here ends the lesson".
6. Do not announce the Psalmody.
7. After the First lesson, stay near the lectern for the Second lesson after the Psalmody.
If there is no Assisting Minister:
8. As the creed closes, move to the lectern to lead the Prayer of the People. The prayers are available on the lectern before the service. Please review the pronunciation of any names with which you may be unfamiliar. This prayer usually closes with a concluding petition lead by the presiding minister.
Reading Lessons at Morning & Evening Prayer
Lessons are simply introduced:
"A Reading from Mark" or "A Reading from Ephesians"
*Note that if one of the readings happens to be a Gospel Lesson from a Eucharistic Liturgy the introduction should be simplified as above, rather than proclaiming the reading as a Gospel lesson.
The Lesson closes with: " The Word of the Lord."
