Ushers

Prior to Service:

  • Arrive at the church 35 to 45 minutes before the beginning of the service.
  • Check to see that front and side doors are open - unlock if necessary. (Keys are attached to side of door frames).
  • Place "Handicapped Parking" signs outside.
  • Check hymn numbers listed in the bulletin.
  • Place Hymn numbers and book source
  • Welcome and greet all worshipers.
  • Ensure that all worshipers have bulletins, both adults and children.
  • Inform guests of the location of washrooms and children’s toys in narthex, and how Sunday School works.
  • When the Prelude begins, close the center doors to the Sanctuary and invite people to enter by the side doors.

After the service begins:

  • Walk through and check basement - lock side door.
  • Count attendance: Use the Count Form at the top of the stairs on the south end of the balcony. Place the Count Form in the offering plate.
  • Collect the offering: After the Passing of the Peace the usher and 3 assistants go to altar and obtain the collection plates from the acolytes.
  • Offertory Procession: Two ushers present the wine and the bread, the next two bring the gifts of money.
  • Ushering for Communion: One usher invites people to the table pew by pew. The second usher assists and guides people to the communion rail.

Conclusion of Service:

  • Usher (or assistant) straightens out hymnals in pews and pick up any bulletins left in pews.
  • Remove hymn numbers from the front Hymnal Boards of the Sanctuary.
  • Release locks on the 2 external locks - side and front doors.
  • Close window and draw window blinds in the Chapel meeting room beside the office.
  • Do not turn off narthex lights. The lights in the church will be turned off by the last person to leave. Turn off downstairs washroom lights.

Other Head Usher duties:

  • Operation of the elevator
  • Be responsible for or schedule ushers for extra services, e.g. Lenten Services, Vesper Services, Christmas Eve, etc.
